About us :
The Institute of Humanitarian Assistance and Cultural Studies (iHACS) was established in Ethiopia in February 2011 and started operations in October 2011. iHACS provides academic, training, consultancy, and cultural services that focus on enhancing and facilitating humanitarian work practice. The academic services composed of Master program and short-term training programs. The graduates of the proposed programs are expected to work as professional aid workers. The academic program will be the first of its kind in Africa and the Middle East. Moreover, iHACS aims at promoting African heritage & culture amongst the international organizations, foreign aid agencies, and NGOs operating in Africa. iHACS provides essential resources and/or technical advice and consultation to researchers, UN agencies, NGOs, governments, individuals, international students, and civil society organizations throughout Africa to strengthen grassroots efforts in the broad-based movement for progressive, comprehensive and sustainable socio-economic development.

Vision
Our vision is to be the pioneer and top educators and trainers in the field of humanitarian work practice in Africa and the Middle East.

1. iHACS is committed to making a difference in the quality of life in African communities through research and cultural studies and activities. iHACS is dedicated to assessing the needs of African people and, to the best of iHACS capability and resources, respond to those needs.

2. iHACS will continue to remain a non government and non-political research and development institute devoted to facilitating the provision of high quality intervention programs and services throughout Africa and the Middle East. iHACS will be a people’ based, performance driven, research and practice oriented institute, focused on finding the answer, solving the problem, and achieving positive outcomes.

3. iHACS will partner with all relevant bodies, donors, organizations and professionals around the globe to maximize resources, deliver high quality services, and be recognized for setting the standard for excellence in applied research in the humanitarian assistance area.

Mission

iHACS is an academic institute. Its mission is to provide distinctive and high quality education and training in the humanitarian field that supports the creation of secure and prosperous African society. The mission will be executed through education, research, consultation, cultural orientation, volunteerism, fundraising, grant making, networking, and donors involvement.

The rationale for establishing iHACS:
There are two rationales for iHACS program:

1. First, the Rationale of an academic discipline for Humanitarian Studies:
Today's model for humanitarian work practice as a profession attempts to provide expert services. That is, for a humanitarian work practitioner to be a professional, one needs to be equipped with what may be the best that academia provides:
i) a solid code of humanitarianism values and ethics,
ii) a body of knowledge and a set of skills, and
iii) a set of systems, organizations, and administrative system that allow the professional to provide his/her services in a reliable manner.
iHACS would make the above possible, since it acts as a medium to teach a commonly accepted curriculum that provides graduates with recognized and relevant qualifications. It also acts as a repository for knowledge, in the form of libraries, scientific journals, databases and conferences.
